My A/C squealed every time the clutch kicked in (defroster, too) for about 3 months. Last week the squealing didn't stop--until the belt broke.

Question: can the clutch be replaced--or does it need the compressor, too?

The clutch isn't your problem. It sounds like your compressor locked up. If that is the case, it's going to get expensive because you will have to replace the compressor, dryer annd likely the condenser too and then you'll have to find out what cause the compressor failure.
