My van has 156,000 miles with minimal problems with the transmission(KOW), just some seapage of fluid. Should I have some preventative work done to avoid problems or should I leave the transmission alone. And should I expect problems regardless to any preventative maintenance work done. Maybe its time to trade it in. I don't want to put $2000 dollars into that old of a vehicle.

156,000 miles, has the tranny ever been serviced? I would drive tell it drops at this point.

I can't say I've come across one of those whose transmission made it that long without a couple filter changes at least.

I had a similiar conversation with a transmission rebuilder. His opinion was if you don't do it, it will kill it. IF you do it and a problem surfaces, then it wasn't far behind anyways. IF it was mine, I would look at it much like an engine ol and filter job. Fluid loses its properties, filters become clogged. I'd change it. Just use the right fluid.-ATF+4.

On the other hand, it doesn't owe you anything, maybe sinking $.00 into other transportation is better for you.
