Sometimes the RPM's on the tackometer jumps to twice the actual reading for a short while (less than a second) and the car will falter or even pop off through the intake. (It is a 3.3L engine with an ignition coil box that looks like it has three coils in it, is squareish at the front left of the engine, with two rows of spark plug wires, 3 & 3. I can't find a schematic so I don't know what drives the coil box. Bob

Van also seems to run out of gas sometimes after it gets hot on the highway after an hour or so. Will always start after 10 minutes or so. Replaced fuel line filter and it seemed to help the rough idle but not this problem.

Has the check engine light come on? Also, I recommend checking fuel pump pressure. The pump may be going bad and causing these problems.

The check engine light does come on after 5 to 15 minutes and then resets itself the next time I start it. I don't remember the error number but it had to do with the fuel system. Could the fuel pump cause the RPM's to jump to twice the engine speed? If not then I probably have two problems, the second being the coil pack?

Hi:
I doubt that either would do that. Chances are it is an idle air control or the throttle position sensor. However, I can't be sure without a code. Try having it scanned again to see of it shows anything different

Hello again,
The error codes set are as follows: 12, 21, 32, 35, 27, and then the 55.
Thanks,
Bob

12 Direct battery input to PCM was disconnected withing the last 50 key-on cycles

21 Upstream oxygen sensor voltage shorted to ground

32 EGR fault

35 only for 2.5L 4 cylender

27 Injector does not respond properly to the control signal

55 Completion of fault code display on Check Engine Lamp (end of codes)

If I was there with you I would start by checking the upstream O2 sensor. Check to see if it is getting power. It can have an affect on RPM's.
