My check engine light comes on after about 2-3 minutes of driving, and occasionally the car has very bad hesitation when accelerateing. It seems to lag, and if you continue to push the accelerator, it suddenly lurches and begins to accelerate. The gas milage seems to suffer when this happens also, I am leaning toward the o2 sensor, but I don't have enough money to replace things that are good. Also, I heard that there is some kind of code you can use on the ignition, that if done correctly, will blink a certain number of times to indicate what prompted the check engine light. If there is such a code, or procedure please let me know. I have also considered the fuel filter, just because in texas, I seem to go through them much faster than anywhere else I have ever lived. We have a refinery right at the edge of town, so maybe the contaminants haven't settlled as much as it would if the gas had to be transported further.
Other than the check engine light and the lurching, there are no other problems with it. Please let me know what you think, and possible remedies or techniques to diagnose your suspicions. Thank you

O.K. I performed the test with the engine light flashing to try to dialgnose the problem.
The light flashed 14 times to indicate that the map sensor was getting too much or too little voltage.
Is this indicitive of another problem, and if so, where should I start to look, or do I just replace the sensor?

Welcome to the forum, how long since a tune-up? Use a gage and check fuel pressure. As far as using the check engine lite method to get flash codes, you can try it. You cycle the key, just till dash lites come on, no further. On-off, on-off, on, then the check engine lite starts flashing, you count the flashes to get the codes. If it doesn't work you will need to use a scanner.
