They are usually noisey, and that is the way most come in, as a noise when turning or first starting out in drive. By then something expensive must be replaced, today it is usually the whole axle, only because it is cheaper than the labor costs to repair any one broken part. This is why its best to have the van checked out from underneath on every oil change. It is so much easier to just move your eyes upward while standing then lying on your back when your just hoping to get out alive. The boots get old, water and dirt get in the velocity joints and that's it. The axle shafts themselves rarely get broken or bent.
