Engine Performance problem
1990 Dodge Caravan 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic ? miles

Hello-

In the car mentioned above, the engine is the Mitsubishi 3.0 SOHC which has a distributor and port injection. What is going on is the van will on occasion start, then it idles very irratically then dies. I understand that the distributor has a "hall effect" switch and I am wondering if that switch controls when the injectors inject fuel being that the enigine does not have a cam position sensor. Also, it has been my expierence that a fuel pump works or does not but in this case, can a failing fuel pump create this problem? Thank you for your time and suggestion.
