my brother drove our old family van thats been in the family ever since i remember and he drove it without oil. It died on the side of the road and he thinks it threw a rod. I dont think it did because i have some mechanical experience. Is it possible that all it needs is a new oil filter and oil?

HIO there, if the engine has seized up or there is now a loud knocking noise, then the damage has been done and adding oil will not help at all.
