Brakes problem
2007 Dodge Caliber 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I recently had new front brakes installed on my 2007 Caliber...which had 20,000 K .
I have been told since I had it done that the dealer took me for a ride because I'm an older female (and a recent widow who knows nothing about cars). I t was told that the brakes were 'pitted' and rusted. The reason for this, I was told, is that I didn't drive the car over long distances often enough and therefore the brakes did not have time to dry off, I assume, from the heat of the motor? I don't drive it very far, that's true. I've been told that rust occurs normally on brakes and that new brakes shouldn't be needed until it has about 100,000k on the car. This is just query to see if the persons who told me I was done in are correct and therefore I should be more careful next time I go to the dealer to have something done that is not on a warranty. The cost was 536CD.

Yes, brake rotors will rust, but as soon as you use the brakes, they get cleaned off. So, no you don't need to drive it long distances to save them.

As far as how long they should last, I have never seen a set of front brakes last 100K. Most people average between 18K and 25K on a set of front brake pads. And you don't need to replace the rotors every time the pads are replaced.

Let me know if you have other questions.
