My car has been diagnosed as needing the wheel bearing replaced however it is only two years old. What causes this to happen to a vehicle and how could I have avoided this from happening.

Driving on bumpy roads. Hitting pot holes. Contamination in grease. Normally wear. Bad workmanships. Bad parts. Whatever it be the only way to find out why yours failed is by examining the bearings.

Can you get a picture of it?

That is a common problem with the car you have. I have a similar car and had to replace the lower control arms. It's caused by dirt getting in the bearings. Only two years old? Make sure you can't get this part paid for by the manufacturer, it may be a defect part. If it is, because your car is only two years old, it should be under warranty.
