have a 2008 dodge avenger with approx 37 thous. miles this car has had the air bag light come on without deployment.

Check for proper operation of the horn and cruise control. If either of them also don't work, suspect a defective clock spring under the steering wheel.

The curise and horn work fine. The airbag light stays on. It does go out for about second.

Still could be a defective clock spring, but there are many other possibilities. The dealer will plug in a hand-held scanner that will read out the memorized diagnostic fault code(s). Those codes will lead you to the circuit with the problem.
