At slow speeds the engine rpm drops off when the steering wheel is turned hard and the engine stalls.

Slow speeds or when the engine is at idle? (Off throttle) Try cleaning the Idle Air Control Motor. Also clean out around the butterfly in the throttle bore with carb cleaner and a rag. This should help stabilize the idle.
