how do you reset the computer on my 1996 dodge avenger. Do you take the negative cable off the battery, leave the positive on, and then start the engine and then turn it back off and put it back on?

The best way is to use an OBD-II scanner. Autozone has the service to check and reset the computer. It is recommended because you won't lose any other setting (radio, clock, etc).

You can remove the negative battery terminal from its post for about 5 minutes. But you will have to re-do all your other settings. Also the computer will have to "re-learn" your driving style.

Thank you so much for your answer about how to reset my computer. I took the negative cable off for about 5 minutes, it reset the computer. The funny thing is, when I had the negative off I tried to start my car and it was like I took the positive off, dead, no electrical, no starter, like the battery was completely dead? Strange, I know thats what the reaction is when the positive is off, but not the negative. Anyway my venger is reset and running great, again thank you so much :)

That is normal. Both battery terminals (positive and negative) must be connected for the current to flow from the battery to your electrical systems and starter.
