what would make my car act like it is running out of gas and shut off and not start without priming?

Do you hear the fuel pump come On when you turn the key on? If not check and test the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay If so check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel pump and also check for injection pulses-
