Do we need to remove the axle to replace front ball joints

Front end is shot, replacing both front ball joints, have the parts so far, but need to know if this can be done without removing the front axle?

If you plan on trying to do the repair on the vehicle then yes you do. But if you are removing the control arm for the repair then no.
