Valve cover gasket replacement

Hello, I have found out that my vehicle listed above (Outback model DOHC engine) is leaking oil through the valve cover cover gasket. I went out and bought the valve cover gasket from Napa. I got home and I took out the windshield washer reservoir and disconnected the battery. Then unplugged the wire from one spark plug and unscrewed it as well. Now since I do not know if I could/should put the new spark plug back in where I took out the old one before or after I replace the valve cover gasket? And if it is after then how do I replace it?

It is a great idea to change the spark plugs when doing this job but be sure to use OEM factory replacements do not fall for aftermarket plugs it will make it run worse.
