distributor drive gear not wanting to go back down

rebuilt motor drove for 3 days and all at once just shut down and wont start. took the drive gear off to replace and it wont go back down, is there a trick to get it back on?

I attached the procedure for you for the removal and replacement of the distributor assembly.

The gear is a key and can only go 2 ways. It has pictures for you to view of the installation.
