I had a new transmission put on my truck (chassis) and now I have a humming noise emanating from the back. The mechanic opened up the differential and did not see any obvious problems. What else could it be, if not the differential?

Much more common to have a tight universal joint. Often if you look closely at the bearing cups, you will see evidence of a reddish-colored rust around one of them.

We do not do that on this site. I am in the middle of Wisconsin. We have a huge number of very reputable dealerships and independent shops, and one well-known crook. We also had a real dishonest independent shop, but he went out of business a couple of months ago for lack of customers. He was on a real busy street in the center of an extended community of over 100,000 people. I do not know the names of any shops in any other cities, and I would not have any idea of their reputations.
