difficult to shift

clutch not slipping but will not shift into first or reverse without shutting off engine.

sounds like a bad clutch or hydraulics are not working if you have hydraulic clutch. may be a bent fork, or throw out bearing going through pressure plate.

that is what i was afraid of, worn pressure plate throw out bearing. thank you that helps a lot.
