Will not stay running after running out of diesel

I ran out of diesel, put a gallon in pumped accelerator pedal ten times and it starts and runs for about eight seconds then cuts out.

Yep they done like to be run out of fuel it takes the primary pump out in the tank. With the key on can you hear the pump prime? (not cranking the engine). If not here is a guide to help walk you through the repair being done on a similar car with instructions and diagrams for your car below. You got lucky you have a service port so you don't need to remove the tank.
