I ran out of diesel, put a gallon in pumped accelerator pedal ten times and it starts and runs for about eight seconds then cuts out.

Yep they done like to be run out of fuel it takes the primary pump out in the tank. With the key on can you hear the pump prime? (not cranking the engine). You got lucky you have a service port so you don't need to remove the tank.
