Was driving truck when I slowed down the truck shut off. It will restart but wants to shut off on idle. Checked fuel pump and fuel filter. Thought maybe bad gas so I drove to store to get new gas I then seen smoke from cab and looked under and seen one of the catalytic converters flowing cherry red. I thought it was stopped up. I took to muffler shop said it would be a misfire and running too rich making extra fuel burn. So I drove home replaced all plugs and wires. Had no misfire code. Had a EGR valve code. So I took off EGR valve and it is stuck. Will not open or close. So I bought new one and put on and truck still wants to shut off. If I take off EGR valve It runs great and idle but as soon as I put EGR valve back on it shuts off. I can keep running by giving gas but has a hesitation. Cannot seem to find problem. Any help will be grateful.

Hello my name is Dave.

It sounds like you do have a run rich condition which would explain why it runs with the EGR removed as removing the EGR creates a large vacuum leak which provides the extra air necessary to burn the extra fuel. My first step would be to check for any codes in the computer as there definitely should be when it is running rich. If you can check the codes and let me know what they are I can help you more.

Hello,

the first code is a problem with the MAF sensor which is common I would by a new one and install it. Cleaning it will not help at this point with that many limes you need a new one anyway. Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job.

Can you clear the codes to see what come back? Also Can you please shoot a quick video with your phone so we can hear the engine, that would be great. You can upload it here with your response.

This guide can help as well.

Cleared codes ran down road few mile. Codes p0300 and p0101 came back. It ideals somewhat okay here but can hear a hissing sound like a vacuum leak or something when giving gas. After running down the road it will not idle.

Thank you for the videos. Let's remove the serpentine belt then start the engine to see if the noise goes away. Next it looks like you have low compression in one or more cylinders. Lets remove the spark plugs and run this test.

Please run down this guide and report back.
