A scan would be a good place to start looking, check fuses as well, does it crank over? do you have spark and fuel pressure? any extra info will be great, you say you only paid $300 for this car, i am wondering if that is telling you something as well..........

Every work shop can do it, it takes 2 min to scan, but as the car wont go, you may have to go get a cheap generic scanner and do it your self, problem is the cheap scanners will only give limited info, check for power at the main starter terminal, this should be constant 12V and power at the small starter solenoid wire with the key on crank, if nothing there, may be a transmission range switch or a deeper problem with the PCM, but i would start with a scan first.
