I have replaced the alternator and battery car will start and drive but 15 minutes into the drive the radio shuts off and the dashboard lights come on. Then it’s hard to steer the car then once you stop it shut off and will not restart.

Hi Leona, although the alternator is new, it sounds like it still isn't charging the battery. I need you to do a simple test so I can confirm that is the issue.

Follow the directions in this link. All you need is either a multimeter or a voltmeter. If you have any questions, let me know.

Additionally, I need the correct engine size. There are several options but all are 4-cylinder. (See pic below) I need to know so I can look at the correct charging system wiring schematics.

Let me know.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

Did you have a chance to perform the aforementioned test on the alternator? If so, let me know the results.

Also, at the alternator, there will be a black wire. That wire should have voltage at all times. I need you to check that for me. Just be careful not to short it to anything.

I attached the wiring schematic below so that you have a reference. Note the black wire is fused by a 180-amp fuse right from the battery. If you find there is no power at the alternator, confirm that fuse is good.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
