Hey, thanks in advance for the advice.

So, *someone* recently needed to jump start this car and they hooked the cables up backwards and cranked the engine for a little while. I noticed a little wisp of smoke come up from the steering column and immediately disconnected the jumper box.

After this, when the jumper box was hooked up correctly, it would crank but not start. Also, the tachometer, odometer, speedometer did not work, the turn signals and wipers did not work, the stereo and climate control would not turn on. None of the indicator lights on the dash work except the 'open door' warning.

Strangely, the headlights worked, as did the horn and interior light.

I started checking fuses. I found a blown fuse for the fuel injection and replaced it, and after that the car starts, but none of the other stuff mentioned above is working. I checked every fuse with a multi-meter, both under the hood and under the dash, and no other fuses are blown.

Because of the wisp of smoke I saw, I took the steering wheel, airbag and steering column covers off. I did not notice any burnt or singed wiring or anything at all that looked out of normal.

I next suspected the key ignition switch. I pulled the old one out and tried to check continuity on the terminals. I did not know what to look for so I bought a new one. The new one had continuity when turned to 'start' where the old one did not, so I installed the new one. Unfortunately, no change.

So now I am at a loss. Obviously I burned something out but I do not know what it could be. Is there any one thing that could cause all the dead systems? Or did I likely burn out multiple things? Fusible links maybe?

Thanks again for your help!

Most likely the multi-function switch that controls headlights and turn signals.

Thanks for the super speedy reply. Could the multi-function switch also cause the wiper switch to be inoperable, and also all the gauges, air conditioner and stereo?

Or, are you thinking there are multiple faults?

There are probably multiple faults. Do you get the "Hey! Close the door!" Buzz with the key in the ignition and door open?
