When I turn the engine on or I'm driving, after some time the gear on the dashboard starts blinking, be it D, R, N etc. When I switch the engine off and start the car again it stops, after driving for some time it starts blinking again and on goes the process. When I scanned it, it threw the error code p1887, Vehicle speed signal wheel speed from brake control module: implausible signal and P189c function restriction due to insufficient pressure build up. What could be wrong? Maria from Malawi

Hello Maria from Malawi,

I have found conflicting reports on what this code means.

The P1887 code on your 2010 Volkswagen Polo indicates an issue with the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Release Switch Circuit.

P189C indicates a problem with the Transmission Control Module (TCM).

and

Error code p1887, Vehicle speed signal wheel speed from brake control module: implausible signal and P189c function restriction due to insufficient pressure build up.

The fact that the "D" light is blinking I would say the transmission is the issue. If the torque converter control solenoid is shorted out, which is common, it might throw the P189c code. Let's remove the solenoid for testing with a voltmeter.

If when testing, you have an open or shorted connection (Zero OHMS of resistance) then the solenoid is bad.

Hello Ken,

Thank you for checking on me regarding the question I asked. Unfortunately the mechanics in Malawi have very little knowledge of such car brands hence its usually try and error. When I took the car to the mechanic and told him to check on it as per your advice, he ignored the advice saying the blinking may be due to low transmission fluid or something to do with basic settings but even after trying those tricks, the blinking hasn't stopped and the errors haven't cleared, as if not enough, some other new fault codes have appeared so currently the car has these codes P17BF, P177F, P189c, P1887, P073E such that most times I'm unable to reverse unless I switch it off and on a couple of times then by chance it reverses, there are also times when im putting the car into D and on the dashboard it starts reading 1 to 7 non-stop and then it picks up and remains in gear 1. And when I switch on the ignition or when I'm driving there are horrible clicking noises from the gearbox. I'm hopeless now and the only option left for me is to start saving money for any Japanese model vehicle as it's so embarrassing and frustrating to be driving the vehicle in such a state, I'm always anxious of what worst thing could happen when driving. I wish I had the equipment, knowledge and expertise so I could follow your advice and work on it myself but I can't, however thank you for your commitment to see these problems solved, I greatly appreciate.

Yep, I hear ya, I would like to help get it fixed for you, but I can say the noise is not a good sign.

P17BF: This code often indicates a hydraulic pump play protection.

P177F: This error code usually suggests a problem with the gearbox functionality, specifically linked to the clutch.

P189C: This code is typically related to the transmission control module and involves the function restriction due to insufficient pressure build-up.

P1887: This code can indicate an issue with the transmission fluid pressure being out of the expected range, either too high or too low.

P073E: This is less common but relates to gear shift position performance.

So, this code is how the gearbox is registering the positions of the gears, can I ask if when you put the car in reverse can you see if the reverse lights are on? You might need a rebuilt transmission, if you can upload a short video of the noise I can tell for sure. Please let me know.

I will record the noise tomorrow, as for the reverse light, yes as soon as I put it in reverse it makes the reverse tone and the lights are on, like today I drove it without any reverse hesitation problems, the problems I experienced were the clicking noises and blinking, I may have forgotten to specify that the code P1887 says: vehicle speed signal wheel speed from brake control module: implausible signal, and there is the ABS and Traction warning lights on the dashboard, some were suggesting the ABS module may be faulty.

Yep, it does sounds like the ABS module is bad, I am not sure if that will cause the reverse noise/problem though. Looking forward to the video, have a good Sunday.

As you can see, the clicking sound is occurring at the same time the "press the brake pedal" shoe disappears, I'd assume the sound has something to do with the braking system though I'm not sure because when the shoe is stable as it has to, there's no clicking sound, as soon as it starts disappearing the noises also start.

And here, I'm not really sure which component is making the noise but I thought it may be the gearbox.

Thanks for the videos, I am not sure what that noise is but it sounds like the transmission will need to come out and be rebuilt.
