I cannot seem to get the CV shaft in the transmission, goes in fine without the circlip but will not go past the circlip. I have to be missing something simple.

Welcome to our world. Try using the ring from the old shaft. Often the new ones are fatter and are almost impossible to compress enough to get them in.

If the ring is loose on the shaft, remove it and try to squeeze it to a smaller diameter so you do not have to work so hard to compress it. Be sure it stays perfectly round, otherwise you will have a high spot that cannot be compressed enough.
