I have a custom buggy that uses a 1997 Volkswagen transmission. It has custom CV axles that i am trying to get repaired. I am just trying to find out what the proper term is for its axle - to -transmission connection, so i can look it up properly. The inner bearing housing connects to the transmission by spline, but while most CV axles have "male" spline connections on both ends, this one has a female connection point for the inner bearing. What is that called?

That would be the inner CV joint, (constant velocity joint). What problem are you trying to solve?

I understand it is the inner CV joint. Most CV axle joints have a spline at the end that attaches to the transmission. This inner CV joint is different. It has a female connection, and the transmission has the spline. The picture shows the spline coming "out of" the transmission.

That is just another way of doing the same thing. Toyota's and some other models use the same design.
