Is the axle still held on by anything? You should make sure that it is straight coming out as you need to be equally as sure that it is straight going back in. Usually, I like to use a big pry bar, about 2ft at least, and pry against the axle where it meets the transmission. It should pop out. (See image 1).
You can also try raising both wheels in the air and having a helper turn the opposite side while pulling on it. Sometimes the snap ring gets in the way during installation/removal.
If this is the right side axle, this is actually a two-piece setup and you will need to remove 3 bolts holding a bracket to the engine (See image 2 and 3). Only then can you remove that side from the transmission.
