This can be the result of many things. Is the check engine light staying on when it is running? If it is, you need to have the computer scanned to identify diagnostic trouble codes. Here is a quick video that shows how it is done:

I realize most people don't own a scanner. However, many parts stores will lend or rent one to you.
Next, since it does start, there could be an issue with low fuel pressure or even an engine vacuum leak. Here are links that explain how to check for both:
