That is an interesting one. What really needs to be done is to have the CAN bus scanned to see where the fault is located. This doesn't need to be a dealership but does require a scan tool that can read can-bus codes.
Basically, CAN stands for controller area network. All the different modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan will retrieve codes regardless of the module storing them.

I realize that it's an inconvenience, but that is where I would recommend starting. Otherwise, it will become a guessing game which can get expensive.
