For some reason the cruise control will not engage in 4th gear. If I drop down to 3rd gear it works. I know it's not good for the engine so I only use it sparingly. What should I look for/check?

Hi,

That is an odd one. It works in 3rd but not 4th. By any chance, have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes? Also, is the ABS or any other warning lights on?

If you haven't scanned it yet, I recommend it. This vehicle has an OBD1 system and doesn't require a scan tool to retrieve codes. Here is a link that shows how it's done. Try this and let me know what is found.

Let me know what you find. The cruise is controlled by several components such as the vehicle speed sensor and the transmission range sensor switch. The range sensor is my focus at this point, but I need to confirm there are codes.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

My ABS and SRS lights stay on. The only code I get is 44 fuel supply system. I had to replace the speed sensor because the other one was melted melted. I put in new spark plugs and wires I also have a new Ignition coil and distributor cap coming. I had to piece the return fuel line (rubber one) because squirrels chewed through it. I also have to replace the catalytic converter because it rusted off. The car probably has over 250,000 miles on it but I'm not sure how long the speed sensor was melted before I got it. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
Al

Hi,

The 43 is related to either the heated O2 sensor or a fuel-related issue. If you look below, I attached diagnostics specific to this code. Take a look through them and let me know if you are comfortable performing them.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

MIL stands for malfunction indicator lamp. Basically, the check engine light.

I almost forgot. I don't have a temperature indicator on the dash. One of my sensors is bad. I replaced the one in the front of the engine. It had a brass probe that went inside the coolant fitting.

Hi,

That could have set the code.

Let me know what you find using the diagnostics above.

Is the transmission range switch also called the neutral safety switch? I know mine is out of whack because if I jiggle the is fijiggle the gear selector in the car in the car the cruise control works in 4th.

Hi,

Yes, they are one and the same. The neutral/park safety and range sensor are one thing.
Now, if you look below, I attached the directions for replacing the switch. I want you to keep in mind, however, the shift cable can be loose or out of adjustment.

There is an adjuster behind the console that you may want to check first. The last two pics I attached are for adjusting the shift cable.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe
