I stalled 3 times, so I went to AutoZone, and they did the code reader on my car. A crankshaft position sensor was recommended. I got one it was put in. The car would crank sounded like it was going to start but didn’t. So, he put the old one back in and it started right up. Then I got a part from Advanced Auto same thing. So, I brought it to a mechanic he tried 3 crankshafts they all did the same thing. My car will not start with a new crankshaft but will start with the old one.

Hi,

This is an interesting one. With the old sensor installed, does the engine run normally other than the three times it stalled? Does it stall at idle or while driving?

Also, did AutoZone provide you with the diagnostic trouble codes they found?

Interestingly, when a crankshaft position sensor is failing, heat is what causes an issue. Once they get hot, the engine will lose spark and not run. After a period of cool-down time, it will work again.

Take a look through this link and let me know if anything mirrors what you have experienced:

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/symptoms-of-a-bad-crankshaft-sensor

Also, if you do have the codes, let me know what they are. If they didn't tell you, see if they will check it again and provide the codes to you.

Let me know.

Joe

Hi,

I’ll go into a little more detail and answer your questions as I go. Thank you for replying by the way. A little back story, for a couple months occasionally on acceleration at any speed my car would jerk or kick randomly. I did notice starting around the end of last month it was doing it more often. Also, when idling in drive it vibrates a little, doesn’t do it in park or neutral.
Friday March 3 was the first time it stalled. I just started going from a stop, maybe under 25 mph and stalled. Started it back up after 2 tries and check engine light was on. The next day my brother changed out the coil packs and spark plugs. Drove it that Saturday the check engine light went off. The car has not done the jerking since he changed those parts.
Anyway, that Sunday the car stalled again. Same as the other time. I went to AutoZone, the codes I got were P0339 and C1211C. Got the part he couldn’t put it in until Monday night. In the meantime, Monday afternoon my car stalled again coming out of a driveway. That was the last time it stalled. He changed the part; the car would sound like it was going to start but it didn’t. Thought it was a defective part, so I got another one he put on Thursday, same thing.
Friday dropped it off at dealership. I picked it up Monday and brought it to my regular mechanic because they never looked at it. At first, he didn’t want to change the part because he did not get any codes. I guess they were erased when the battery was undone. He ended up trying 3 parts, recommended to try the dealership. I called them and they basically said they have to run a diagnostic test on it. They won’t just change the part.
I drove it today and went to AutoZone and Advanced Auto no codes. I guess I have to wait for it to stall again, if it does, I’m bringing it to the dealership. Even though it hasn’t stalled again I was thinking to just get a genuine part from the dealership to see if that works. Other the slight vibration during idling it runs fine.
Is it possible the part was just loose?

Hi,

The P0339 is related to the crankshaft position sensor (CKP). However, it doesn't indicate a failed sensor. Instead, it is related to an intermittent signal issue. Yes, the sensor could be bad, but there is a good chance it was installed incorrectly or there is a wiring issue.

When the new sensor was installed, was the connector to it checked for damage or wiring damage to it?

Also, could you confirm the C1211 for me? That code isn't relevant to this vehicle.

I attached a pic below showing the CKP. It needs to be evenly and fully installed. It isn't uncommon for rust to prevent that from happening. Once it's in, there is only one way you can bolt it in place. You could ask the person that installed it if that was done correctly.

Let me know. Also, I would recommend getting an OEM part. So many of the aftermarket parts are faulty. However, I rarely have issues with the place you got the sensor, but anything is possible.

Let me know.

Hi,

No one ever touched the sensor before it stalled that I know of. I’ve had the car since 2019 with no problem like that.
As for the wiring I’m not sure, but I think the mechanic may have checked that. He said he has never had a problem where the car didn’t start after changing the part. I do know after both of the ones my brother installed, he put the old one in, and it started right up both times, no problem. The location of the part is in such a horrible spot so he couldn’t get a really good look at it, but since it started when he installed the old one, I would think he did it correctly. Like I said in my last post it hasn’t stalled since before he tried to change the part. The last one to reinstall it was the mechanic so it should be in there right.
The other code was C121C.
Out of curiosity I would like to get an OEM part and see if that works before I go to a dealership.
I didn’t see a pic attached to your post.

Thank you for replying

Hi,

I think that is a good idea. I attached a pic from the manual. I had a better one last night, but I can't find it again. UGH.

Pic 1 shows the labor time and the OEM part number and price.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi,

The info is for a Cherokee. Is it pretty much the same thing? Now I just have to convince my brother to try the OEM part. If not, I’ll see if a mechanic will do it. Luckily it hasn’t stalled again.

Hi,

I'm so sorry. Ugh! I attached the parts and labor below specific to the compass.

Let me know if that helps.

Joe

Hi,

Thanks for the info. I should have got that part first. I don’t know when it will be changed, but when it is I will let you know if it worked.

I’m back with an update. My car was running well until it stalled 4 times within about 25 minutes last Thursday. By Saturday I was able to get a part from the dealership, my brother installed it, and I haven’t had any problems since. So basically, my car just needed an OEM part.

Hi,

Thanks for the update and I'm glad it's not giving you trouble now. I can't tell you how many faulty aftermarket parts I have seen lately, especially the lower-end online ones. It becomes very frustrating, as you know because if it's new, it should work properly.

Regardless, thanks again for the update and feel free to come back anytime in the future.

Take care,

Joe
