I crank the engine, it acts like it wants to start just after I release the key from crank position.

It is common for the fuel pump to go out in these cars, but to be sure we can do a fuel pressure test by renting a gauge from the auto parts store. here is a guide to help and the fuel pressure specs. Also, I have included a video of how to change the pump out in case you need it.

Replacement video

Key On Engine Off .................... 60-66 psi

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Here is the relearn procedure.

CRANKSHAFT POSITION (CKP) SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE
1. Install the scan tool.
2. Apply the vehicle's parking brake.
3. Block the drive wheels.
4. Close the hood.
5. Place the vehicle's transmission in Park (AT) or Neutral (MT).
6. Idle the engine until the coolant temperature reaches 65 C (150 F).
7. Turn OFF all the accessories.

IMPORTANT: If the Crankshaft Position (CKP) System Variation Learn Procedure cannot be completed successfully, refer to DTC P1336 CKP System Variation Not Learned for additional diagnostic information.

8. Enable the Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn Procedure with the scan tool.

IMPORTANT: After the ignition switch is turned to the CRANK position, the Vehicle Control Module (VCM) must see a change in the state of brake switch (Released to Applied) to run the learn procedure. Also, the service brakes and the parking brake must be held throughout the duration of the learn procedure.

9. Apply and hold the service brakes.

IMPORTANT: While the learn procedure is in progress, release the throttle immediately when the engine starts to decelerate. The engine control is returned to the operator and the engine will respond to throttle position after the learn procedure is complete.

10. Slowly raise the engine speed to 4,000 RPM.
11. Immediately release the throttle when the engine speed decreases.
12. Turn OFF the ignition for 15 seconds after the learn procedure is completed successfully.

Please let us know what happens.

New crank sensor, cleaned engine grounds still don't start. Has 61lbs fuel pressure, spark at #1 cyl and#2 cyl that I checked and not erratic, tack pluses while cranking, watch ing voltage on scan tool has voltage with key on and during crank. Poured 1 ounce of gas in throttle body still dont even try to start( 40 degrees out). This problem was intermittent, when truck runs it runs good now it inop hasn't ran since in warmer garage last week. Got spark, compression, give it fuel source I am stumped. There are no converters on exhaust.

Let's remove the spark plug to see if they have soot on them (black), also do all of the spark plugs get spark? New cap and rotor? Plus, we should check the rotor position as well to make sure the distributor drive has not sheared which will cause the spark to be at the wrong time. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.

Well did nothing but pull the truck into heated building for 2 days while out of town, when I came home truck started right up runs and idles perfect. Took fuel sample off fuel gauge fitting, good gas. When thetruck was outside 30 degrees cranks no start, bring into 60 degree shop starts and runs perfect. 55lbs fuel at idle rap throttle jumps to 60. When outside looked at data sensons read appropriate values, no check engine light on, did not look at history codes.I got a mess here glad its my plow truck and we have no snow. Lee

Ah! I have seen the engine coolant sensor short out in cold weather causing the engine not to start. Here is the sensor so you can unplug it to see if that makes a difference. Please go over this guide and report back.

Okay, here is the scoop: I contacted a friend that has a friend who's worked at a chevy dealer for 30 years. I told him that the truck will not start in cold, he asked if I had good spark, I told him had spark but don't know good or bad, he told me the coil is weak.I replaced coil now the truck starts fine in the cold, I must of over looked quality of spark, checked with spark plug tester.
