Put a little gas in the carburetor and it hits but won't run. Runs just second and shuts off.

You have already identified the problem. It is certainly fuel related. If I recall, in 1986, these vehicles had a mechanical fuel pump. If you follow the fuel line from the carb, it will lead you to the pump. If it's fuel-injected, it's a different story.
Here is the issue. In 1986, it appears the vehicle could have come with either an electrical or mechanical fuel pump. Does the vehicle truly have a carburetor or is it fuel injected?
