Hi, I had my engine overhaul and now that I want to start it up, it will only crank and not start. What could be wrong? Is the timing out of order? Or could it be the points?
Any suggestions! This is a Toyota 4a eight valve engine.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros,com.

Many things can cause this problem. I need you to run a series of simple test so I know what we are working with.

First, confirm firing order, see first three pictures below. Select your vehicle.

Next, determine of the engine is getting spark to the plugs:

and

If the firing order is correct, you are getting spark, and whoever rebuilt the engine properly timed the engine, the only thing could be it is not getting fuel.

This year vehicle can be carbureted or fuel injected, I need to know which you have.

I also attached a picture of the timing marks for the belt.

Let me know if this helps.

Take care,
Joe

Hi Joe. Many thanks for your help and your quick response. I found the problem, it was the firing order and the timing marks which was out of order. Got it fixed and it started!

Best Regards.
