My engine shut off while driving, specifically while turning. It hasn't started since.
Instead, as I turn the key, there is high pitched cranking sound that sounds off. I don't think it's the sound it usually makes while starting.
Following advice from others I have replaced the battery, the fuel pump, the fuel line just under the pump (intake?)
Also, going with the codes a cheap code reader has thrown, I've replaced the exhaust camshaft position sensor, and the camshaft solenoids, exhaust and intake.
Additionally, I removed my starter and took it to an auto parts store to get it tested. Once hooked up, it roared to life and seemed to work.

I am an amateur and have followed online How-To's and tutorials to the best of my ability. Thus far, I'm pretty sure I've done it all correctly. But to no avail.

Other codes the cheap code reader is showing me mention the camshaft position sensor that I didn't change yet in the intake location. It also throws a code for a fuel pressure sensor and code u0100, a code that wasn't present until recently.

Any expert help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,

Is it possible for you to record the sound it makes when you try starting it? That would be really helpful.

As far as the issue, let me know all codes you found. The U0100 is related to the data communications system (CAN). That could be an issue, but I need to know the other codes you found.

Let me know.

Okay, I've uploaded the audio file to Soundcloud. Hopefully that works for you. Warning: It's loud. You may want to set your volume low at first.

And here are the codes that were given to me just this afternoon, despite having replaced some of the parts in question:
P0013 - Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit
P0366 - Exhaust Camshaft Position Sensor Performance
P0192 - Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
P0341 - Camshaft Position Sensor Performance
U0100 - Lost Communication with Engine Control Module

I erased the first one, but it came back when I scanned again. My assumption is some of those will go away once I erase them and take the car for a drive.

Hi,

Do me a favor. Open the hood and have someone crank the engine. Does the fan belt turn? I agree that sounds horrible. Either we lost compression or there is a problem at the flywheel preventing the starter from engaging.

The codes could indicate several things. However, the one that sticks out to me is the lost communication with the PCM. However, I need to know if the engine is actually turning.

Let me know.

Thanks for your timely reply. I apologize for my non-timely reply. Life really got in the way this past week.
But to answer your question, yes, the fan belt turns when the ignition is cranked.
Thank you again for any input.

Hi,

No problem whatsoever. Listening to the video you provided and knowing the engine is actually turning, it sounds like either the timing chain has broken or has jumped time.

What I suggest is to remove the valve cover at the top of the engine so you can see the chain. Check first to see if it is still intact. If it is, then see if it appears to be extremely loose.

The biggest concern at this point is if the chain has failed in one way or another. This is an interference engine. That means if the timing is far enough off while the engine is turning, internal damage is likely to take place.

I attached a pic below of the part I'm referring to.

Let me know what you find.

Joe
