There was a loss of power and then completely shut off, crank no start?

If that is the engine cranking, you lost compression. It doesn't sound like there is any.

If the timing chain broke or jumped time, that is what can happen. To make matters worse, I believe all 328i vehicles with the 2.0L are interference engines.

What I need you to do is check engine compression.

You will need a compression gauge, but if you don't have one, most parts stores will lend one to you. Note: Compression should be between 100 psi and 150 psi with a maximum variation of 30 psi between cylinders. I have a feeling you are going to find 0 psi or extremely low compression. If that is the case, we will need to inspect the timing chain and timing.

I had a feeling. That is what it sounded like in the video. The interesting thing is it has a chain and not a belt. Normally, a chain will last the life of the engine. At 108K, it shouldn't have failed.

Do you plan to remove and inspect things such as the timing chain and cylinder head?

That isn't good news. There is a good chance internal damage was done to the cylinder head, pistons, or valves.

Now that you know the timing chain failed, we need to remove the cylinder head to check for damage.

Do you need anything as far as the timing chain/tensioner replacement? If you do, let me know.
