Crank no start?

I had a scanner hooked up and was driving collecting wheel speed info on an ABS sensor. The car just suddenly stopped. I took the whole front of the engine off to get to and replace the Cranks position sensor. Once replaced and before putting all the accessories back in I tried to start. Cranks well but no start. Also, the tachometer does not move. I checked the power supply at the sensor, and it has 12v. I also tested continuity on the ground wire, and it was good. The signal wire I didn’t know how to test.

Any ideas? I assume not having the alternator power steering pump off would not make a difference.

Thanks

Hi,

I assume there is no spark at the plugs. So, first, we need to check the ignition coils to confirm they are getting power as well as the ignition power transistor.

If you look below, I attached a couple pictures to help orient you. At each coil there should be a blue wire with a black tracer. With the ignition switch in the run position, check that wire for power. Do the same at the transistor.

As far as testing the signal wire from the CKP, you need an oscilloscope to identify standard wave form from the signal wire.

Let me know.

Joe

Back probed and got 12 V to all coils and the transistor.

I pulled off a plug wire at the coil and had my wife crank and saw no spark.

Plugs are impossible to get to with taking the whole intake off.

By the way I changed the timing belt and water pump while I have it torn down. Timing is perfect according to the marks. I even made sure crank resonating plate was flat.

Hi,

I'm not sure I understand. Do you have spark from the coils?

Let me know.

Barry, is your scanner able to read live data? If it is, have you checked to see if there is an RPM signal?

I suspect something is happening at the crankshaft position sensor. If it isn't sending a signal, there won't be an RPM signal.

At this point, we need to check the CKP signal using an oscilloscope. Since we likely don't have one, we need to recheck the work that was done. Since there is no signal (based on RPM) either the sensor is faulty, it is not close enough to the sensor disc, or we have a broken signal wire.

Let me know your thoughts. Also, if you do have or have access to an oscilloscope, let me know.

I had ordered another crank sensor before contacting you so I installed it today with the same results. Is there anyway the tone ring on the crankshaft can be bad? Also, I was doing an ABS test while driving when the car just quit. It’s never started since. I’m not sure if the tone ring on the crank also sends information to the ABS system.

Hi,

The two aren't related. Checking the ABS system wouldn't have caused the vehicle to lose spark.

Do me a favor. If you haven't already, check the ground. I realize you have continuity to ground, but the G3 ground is for a few different components. It could be failing under a load.

It is located under the right side of the dash and behind the kick panel. I attached a few pics below to help you locate it.

If the ground is good, we need to confirm continuity via the signal wire. If that wire is good, there is power to the CKP, and there is ground, there is a chance the PCM has failed.

Let me know.

Joe

It was the ignition coil transistor not being plugged in completely. I heard a buzzing noise while I had the ignition switch on. I chased it down and it was that transistor being half plugged. Thank you so much for your great help.

Hi,

You are very welcome and thanks for the update. I'm glad you were able to resolve the issue. Also, that was an easy one to miss if it was partially connected.

Take care of yourself and feel free to come back anytime in the future.
