I was driving for awhile and notice that the check engine light came on plus the red lighting bolt light as well came on. not sure why but the car was hesitating a little bit and I opened the hood to feel the radiator cap that was only slightly warm to the touch. I was driving for over an hour but it is a little cold outside so I am not sure.

Do you know what this can be?

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.

The radiator cap is most likely normal if it was cold outside. However, you need to have the computer scanned for trouble codes. Since the check engine light is on, there will be diagnostic trouble codes stored which will indicate where the problem is originating. Now, the red lightening bolt indicates a problem with the electronic throttle control system, so that is most likely why you had the symptoms you described.

With that being said, it really needs scanned to determine exactly where to start. I realize most people don't own a scanner, but here is a quick video that shows how to use one. If you don't have one, most parts stores will scan it for free. Have that done and let me know what codes were found. They will be a four digit number preceded with a P. For example, P0300.

Again, don't feel this is related to the cooling system, but rather with the electronic throttle control system. If you get the codes, I can better direct you with the how too's.

Let me know what you find.

Take care,
Joe

Actually I did take it to AutoZone to have a scan done before the email and they told me it was a thermostat. I'm not sure if it is or not.

AutoZone told me it was the thermostat, but I am not sure because the the radiator cap was warm to the touch not hot like it's supposed to be. I was able to keep my hand on it for long time. Anyways check engine light still on this morning and red lightning bolt is not showing now.
