Girlfriend came out of work to find coolant on the ground. Then the temperature gauge was stuck halfway. I drove it a half hour home and the gauge never moved up or down. And it was losing coolant from the over flow tank.

It sounds like you have a coolant leak and the engine is over heating. When the coolant level is low there is nothing for the coolant sensor to read so it just sits. I would find out whats going on before you hurt the engine.
