No pressure in the cooling system. I know the water pump is going bad because it is making a rattling noise and beginning to leak. Would this be the cause of no pressure in the system?

The pressure cap is responsible for holding pressure in the system, however a leaking pump will not let it.

On that engine it is really not a good idea to let the pump leak, tends to damage the timing belt.

I would drain the coolant, run a flush through it (no reason to run the flush on the new pump) Then change the pump and timing belt (has to come off to get to the pump) Change the thermostat and the pressure cap. Top up with fresh coolant and enjoy a rattle free ride.
