Temperature gauge not getting hot, but dash says overheating and smoking. Lost some antifreeze but filled overflow with water and not using any or circulating at all.

Hi,

That is interesting that the temperature gauge doesn't indicate overheating. When you notice smoke, does it smell like coolant or something different? Also, is it steam or smoke?

Do me a favor. When the engine is cold, remove the radiator cap and confirm there is coolant in the radiator. Also, let me know if there is any smoke from the exhaust. One last thing. Let me know if this happens at highway speed or only in town stop-and-go traffic. If only in town, pay attention to see if the cooling fans are turning on. Here is a link that explains how they work:

Let me know,

Joe
