Only when driving up hill the engine temperature goes up

The car runs cool until I am driving up hill. At that point, going uphill, the temperature rises to the 3/4 mark and stays. Once I return to flat ground it cools down. I burped the unit and it seems to be holding, but I am confident it will return as I am not a mechanic and do not know the bottom line. Please help!

Hi,

If this only happens when you are placing the engine under a load, then I suspect it is likely in need of flushing the cooling system. I feel if it was the thermostat or another problem, it would also happen when driving on a flat surface.

I would start by flushing the system to see if that takes care of the problem. Here is a link that explains how it's done:

Let me know if that helps. Also, let me know if you have other questions or need help.

Take care,
Joe

So the erratic needle on the temperature gauge stopped moving all together and is sitting on cold at the bottom. I think it may be a sensor. But the 2007 Sorento has so little info online. Could it be a faulty sensor?

Hi,

Yes, the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT) can be bad or the connection could be loose or corroded. The ECT is mounted on the cylinder head. I attached a picture to help you locate it.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions. Note, before replacing the sensor, confirm there isn't a connection issue.

Take care and let me know if you have questions or need help.
