Coolant leak/overheating?

It’s leaking what I believe is coolant, I was driving car started shaking / sputtering and then overheated. Pulled over, coolant reservoir was empty, filled with water, tried to drive sputtering stopped but still overheating.

With the engine cool, remove the radiator cap, fill the radiator with water and some in the reservoir. start the engine with the radiator cap off. Let it run then put the cap back on and shut the car off. Let it sit and cool down. Sometimes the coolant can get vapor locked and not circulate. Check the reservoir to see if the water went down. If it fills up when cool the thermostat could be going bad. Be careful as the car and water can be very hot if it overheats.
