While driving home, the car began to overheat. Drove 5 miles to get home. Once parked/cooled, I filled the coolant. The cruiser was leaking coolant. I believe it is the water pump. I have purchased a new pump but would like a guide on how to replace it.

The water pump is driven by the timing belt so the front of the engine must be removed to do the job so I would get a new timing belt and tensioner as well. Here is how the job is done in the images below which includes the timing belt marks. Start by disconnecting the battery and draining the coolant. Then remove the serpentine belt and timing belt cover.

Hi,

To replace the water pump on this vehicle, you need to remove the timing belt. There are several steps to this and other steps that will need to be taken. I will attach all of them below. Note: The first 6 pics are the actual directions for the pump itself. The remaining pics are the directions related to removing the timing belt, removing the rear belt cover and cam gears, draining the coolant, and so on.

Before you remove the actual timing belt, make sure the marks are aligned as mentioned in the directions. Otherwise, it will be more difficult to time it again.

As far as the water pump itself is concerned, it is easy to install. It's the process to get to it that makes it more difficult.

Take a look through the directions below and let me know if you have questions or what I can do to help.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

That isn't something the manual supplies. You will, however, need the basics, sockets, screwdrivers, and so on. Additionally, you will need to remove the cam sprockets. I believe there is a cam sprocket tool that holds the cam gears in place, but most parts stores will lend one to you. Additionally, you will need to remove the crankshaft pulley, so you need a puller for the harmonic balancer.

Wow, this is a tough question when it's not in front of me. LOL

Let me know if I can help.

Joe
