Coolant leak?

I was driving home the other day and heard a sound, almost like crunching leaves, when I would accelerate. When I got to the stop light my battery light came on and I wasn’t able to accelerate. I turned the car off and back on and was able to accelerate again. Once I started driving, I smelt a burning smell, and I immediately drove home and popped the hood. There was some white smoke coming from my engine and I checked my coolant reservoir, and it was empty. What is the problem?

Yep, it sounds like you heard the engine overheating which will happen with no coolant. I would wait until the engine cools down, then refill the cooling system with water. Then without starting the engine use a flashlight to inspect where the water is coming from. This guide should help:
