Had two mechanics look at it both say it's the heater bypass tube. First guy said have to remove the intake manifold to get at it. Second guy said have to remove everything on the front of the motor to get behind the water pump housing. Which is accurate?

Welcome to 2CarPros.

Actually, both are correct. The intake needs removed to replace the tube, and a lot has to come off the front of the engine to access the bypass tube. The biggest problem is that the tube is metal with an o-ring and not easy to manipulate without damaging it. With that, both are correct. The intake needs removed along with several components on the front of the engine.

I have attached an exploded view of what they are dealing with. Let me know if it helps or if you have other questions.

Please keep in mind, maybe the person who said only the intake needs removed knows a trick to do it. If he does it and quotes you a price, make sure he writes it down and sticks by it.

Okay. Thank you much. The tube itself needs to be replaced. How much should this job cost?

Welcome back:

If you look at the picture I attached, it shows parts and labor for removing and replacing the intake manifold. The part prices listed are OEM parts so they are more expensive than what can be purchased at a parts store, but it gives you an idea of cost.

Next, the labor is listed in hours. Add the hours together and multiply the shop's labor rate by the hours to determine labor costs.

Now, I am unable to find the pipe listed separately. However, the part should be in the area of $30.00 and you can add an extra thirty minutes to the labor for installing it.

The last thing are the miscellaneous items. You will need to replace the engine coolant, there will be shop supply costs, so suspect an additional $30.00.

Please understand this is an estimate. I have no idea where you are located or the cost of parts in your area. I just hope I'm close enough to be helpful for you.

The picture I attached is right from Alldata, and they are very accurate with this info.

Take care and feel free to let me know if you have other questions.

Take care,
Joe
