I have a hole in what I believe is my radiator top up tank, it is in the top of the tank so the tank does not leak. Is this an urgent problem or can it be secured with duct tape or a home repair kit?

Definitely not. Duct tape will not work. That system is pressurized. The radiator has to be replaced and do not drive it until you do.

The radiator is fine, it is the actual coolant tank that has a hole in the top of it, surely this means the radiator wont need replacing?

I misunderstood. If it is a pressurized tank it will have to be replaced. If it is just a reserve bottle, you may be able to patch it. They are not very expensive to replace anyway.
