coolant fan not being read by computer to turn on

if I have ac on fan kicks in - if it is idling and gets slightly above 1/2 the coolant spews out. the fan doesn't kick in in heat nor defrost

Check the engine coolant temperature sensor-on rear of engine

explain rear engine? I was told it had something to do with the computer?
