Motor revs okay when in neutral, but when I shift the transmission into drive, the car lurches forward harshly and stalls. Mechanics don't seem to be able to fix it, it seems to me like a transmission problem.

Hello,

Automatic vehicles use what's called a torque converter to manage transmission fluid and keep your engine running while at a stop.

A common problem on many automatic cars is the Torque Converter Clutch fails to release and causes the car to stall when it comes to a stop. Most of the time it is a stuck Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) solenoid. It could also be a faulty torque converter.
