Connecting front and rear shifter cables

I'm trying to connect the front shifter cable to the rear shifter cable. The connector clip won't stay put and the service manual that i am using does not give enough information. I have no idea how to do this. Please help. Thank you.

I figured it out. Part of the cable was broken.
